View to the Jungfernstieg, 18×24cm, Oil on bard, 2017,
Astrid Volquardsen
This painting dates back to mid February when it was bitterly cold. It started with a plein air study but standing in the shadow int the cold wind let it come to an early end. So I started this piece straight in the studio the next morning, all the light still fresh in my head.
You can see the view in the middle of Hamburg the so called »Jungfernstieg«. »For Hamburg residents, the historical importance of the promenade plays a major role: In the past, families came here on Sunday to walk and introduce their unmarried daughters (»Jungfern«) – hence the name«
Today it’s still the meeting point for all kinds od folks, but without their parents.
